Remploy helps ‘Inspirational’ Rhiannon find her first job

[19-01-2010]
A university graduate who was paralysed from the waist down following a riding accident when she was 13, is celebrating securing her first full-time job, thanks to support from Remploy.

Rhiannon Hicks, 21, from Lampeter, Dyfed is working as a team support for the Welsh Assembly Government at their recently opened Aberystwyth offices. Her role includes organising meetings, filing and photocopying and keeping staff records.

She was supported into work by Remploy, the UK's leading provider of specialist services for people with disabilities and other health conditions.

Rhiannon first registered at Remploy's Swansea branch in May this year when she was approaching the end of her studies. She was placed on a Graduate Employability programme and received help with skills such as writing an effective CV and all-important interview techniques.

"Remploy played a big part in supporting me into work," said Rhiannon. "This job wasn't advertised so I wouldn't have known about it if it hadn't have been for Remploy."

Rhiannon has never let her disability stop her from enjoying a full and active life. Earlier this year she graduated from Trinity University, Carmarthen with a degree in Social Inclusion and Educational studies. And five years ago she was the youngest in a team of 14 that climbed Helvellyn, at 3,117 ft the third highest peak in England.

"It was a tough climb but it was a thrilling achievement to reach the summit," said Rhiannon who raises money for the Back-Up Trust, a charity that helps people with spinal injuries. She has no intention of resting on her laurels, however, and is busy planning her next challenge - a dare-devil sky dive.

"Rhiannon is such an inspirational character," said Vanessa Brookes, her manager at the Welsh Assembly Government, "She has picked up her role here very quickly and has established herself as a valued member of the team."

"We are delighted to have played a part in Rhiannon's progress in to paid work," added Christine Abbott a Specialist Services Advisor at Remploy's Swansea branch. "Her enthusiasm and outgoing nature made her a great addition to the Employability Programme."
